What is Google Places?

Simply put, Google Places is a great way for local businesses to be found.

Here's a search I did for "homer ak hotel", something a potential customer might search for when doing research on where to stay in Homer. The yellow square on the left shows many of the hotels listed with Google Places and in the yellow square on the right is a map of Homer with each business marked as an orange tear-drop marker.

What are the benefits of being listed with Google Places?

• Google Places listings tend to be placed high or at the top of search results
  
• You get a profile page that provides basic information on your business such as:
  • contact information
  • hours of operation
  • photos of your products or business
  • custom coupons and offers customers can use
  • a place for customers to write review
• You get to show up on iPhone and other smartphone search results. Many smartphones use geolocation to show its users better results. For example, a tourist is on the spit at 2 a.m. and needs a cab, they pull out their iPhone and type in "cab" in the search bar. What comes up?
  And just like that, they have a phone number!
